Pica Font: Typewriter Pitch Versus Typographic Measurement

Understand pica font terminology, distinguish typewriter pitch from the pica measurement unit and translate a layout brief without confusing width and type size.

Pica can describe typewriter spacing or a publishing measurement. Ask which meaning a brief uses before selecting a font size: the same word does not make the two systems interchangeable.

01

Distinguish typing pitch from the pica unit

The Brother AX-10 instruction manual, reproduced publicly, distinguishes Pica at 10 characters per inch from Elite at 12. That pitch describes horizontal character spacing. In a separate system, W3C’s CSS length definitions define one pica as one-sixth of an inch, equivalent to 12 points or 16 CSS pixels. Setting text to 12 points does not, by that fact alone, give it 10-character-per-inch spacing.

02

Translate the requested measurement before choosing the resource

Write the required property in full: characters per inch for a typing-pitch reference, or picas and points for a layout dimension. A six-inch line contains 60 character positions at a fixed pitch of 10 per inch; that is a width calculation, not a recommendation for a 60-point font. If a publishing note says 2p3, it means two picas plus three points: 27 points. W3C illustrates expressing that mixed measurement in CSS as calc(2pc + 3pt). Keep the units beside the value so the number cannot silently change meaning.

03

Check the output rather than relying on the font name

For a typewriter-style composition, compare a line with repeated characters and measure its intended output width. In a digital layout, the chosen family, size and spacing jointly determine that width; a similar-looking face does not guarantee the original pitch. Cutive Mono is an independent monospaced specimen, not a claim of matching a particular machine. Use the font size converter for the separate unit-conversion task. The homepage’s copyable text styles change Unicode characters, not a typewriter’s pitch or a document’s dimensional units.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Does pica always mean a 12-point font?

No. In the cited typewriter manual it identifies 10-character-per-inch pitch. As a measurement unit, one pica equals 12 points.

Does a CSS pixel necessarily equal one physical display pixel?

No. CSS defines its own unit relationships; device pixels and physical output can differ. Keep the intended output medium explicit.
