THE TYPE NOTEBOOK

Typewriter Fonts

Compare real typefaces, then choose the details that fit your words.

Typewriter styling can mean equal-width spacing, a mechanical rhythm, or the uneven texture of a worn ribbon. Those are separate design choices: a perfectly clean monospace and a distressed typewriter face can feel very different. Use the editable specimens to compare your own text, then follow the family links for background, styles and official downloads.

01

What this style means

Typewriter styling can mean equal-width spacing, a mechanical rhythm, or the uneven texture of a worn ribbon. Those are separate design choices: a perfectly clean monospace and a distressed typewriter face can feel very different.

The collection is a starting point for comparing letterforms. It does not promise that a font used for one project, brand or period is identical to any of these families.

02

Compare the families and their references

Cutive Mono draws on classic typewriter designs, while Cousine focuses on fixed-width document compatibility. Special Elite offers a more weathered impression. Compare the clean and textured options using dates, punctuation and repeated letters rather than only an ornamental heading.

Explore the full profiles for Special Elite, Cutive Mono, Cousine. Each includes its own project description and source license, so you can judge the actual design rather than the category name alone.

03

Try it in a real layout

For a letter, try a complete paragraph before choosing a distressed face. For a poster, the rough texture may be useful in one short line. Align a few numbered entries if equal character width matters; appearance alone does not establish a family’s metrics.

Use the same wording and approximate size in each specimen. The size and tracking controls help you inspect the design; the PNG is a visual reference rather than a complete page layout.

04

Downloads, copying and next steps

Open a family’s official font page from its specimen when you want the font files. The selected source distributions include open licenses; review the license included with the specific files you obtain, especially if you plan to modify or redistribute them.

Copying ordinary letters does not carry these typefaces to a different app. Use a font-aware design tool or export an image when the appearance matters. For the character-substitution alternative, read Unicode text versus real fonts.

05

Find a typewriter direction in Google Docs

In desktop Google Docs, select the text and open the Font menu to choose an available family. For more choices, open More fonts. Google’s help documents searching the font dialog by a category such as mono. Pick from the families actually offered in your document rather than assuming a local installation or an unrelated font catalog controls Docs.

Compare a clean fixed-width direction with a more textured design where available. Keep the full paragraph, dates and punctuation in the test. The live specimens on this page are independent comparisons; they do not certify that every family or style is offered in every Google Docs language setting. For defaults and broader document controls, use the Google Docs guide.

06

For Word, compare Courier New before choosing a worn-ribbon effect

Microsoft describes Courier New as a monospaced descendant of the IBM typewriter design and lists availability within Office applications. If it appears in your Word font menu, it supplies a concrete clean typewriter direction to compare with these more varied specimens. The Courier New profile covers the documented family separately.

For a typed-letter effect, use a date, salutation and paragraph rather than only a headline. Decide whether the brief needs uniform character spacing or visibly rough ink: a clean fixed-width choice can satisfy the first without imitating a damaged ribbon. If the texture obscures small punctuation, reserve that face for the title and keep the longer passage cleaner. A manuscript submission has its own formatting requirements; consult those instructions or the screenplay guide when relevant instead of using distress as a default.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Does a typewriter font always have equal-width letters?

No. A typewriter-inspired design may imitate texture or letter shapes without fixed-width spacing. Check the specific family’s category and test aligned characters.

Are these live previews free to use?

Yes. You can edit and compare the specimens here without payment. Use each official source link to download the font and read the included license.

Why do copied words look different in another app?

The previews use actual fonts loaded on this page. Ordinary clipboard text carries the characters, not a requirement for another app to render the same font.
