01

Choose a font for reviewing the notes

Start with the material you expect to revisit: headings, questions, definitions, examples and perhaps code or equations. Compare Source Sans 3 and Lora below with a full paragraph rather than a title alone. Keep the initial size and column width equal so the letterforms are the main variable. A handwritten-looking family may suit a heading, but the working question is whether you can comfortably scan and reread the actual page. No specimen establishes one universal learning advantage.

02

Use note structure as well as a family choice

Cornell’s Learning Strategies Center documents a system with a note-taking area, a cue or question column and a summary. Its procedure includes using the cues to recite ideas before checking the notes again. This is a study structure, not a recommendation for a particular typeface. In an original typed page, make the cue questions visually distinct through spacing or weight, then keep the explanation calm enough to read. Consult the Cornell system reference for its own procedure.

03

Set a desktop OneNote default with its scope clear

Microsoft’s instructions for OneNote for Microsoft 365, 2024, 2021 and 2016 use File > Options, then Default font to choose family, size and colour. The change applies to new pages, not all existing notes or page titles. Existing content must be selected and reformatted page by page. Read the official desktop guide before assuming another platform uses identical controls. Keep a sample old page and new page to compare the result.

04

Proof the study page in its intended medium

Review a complete note page on the screen you use and, if needed, print one page at its final scale. Check that questions remain easy to find, examples stay beside their explanations and the summary has enough room. Avoid using several unrelated fonts to encode importance; a small consistent hierarchy is easier to maintain when adding material later. Keep source quotations and your own comments distinguishable through labels as well as appearance, and recheck the page after changing its width.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Is there a single best font for all notes?

No. Compare the actual page, reading medium and content. Font choice works together with hierarchy and note structure.

Does changing OneNote’s desktop default reformat every old note?

No. Microsoft says the default affects new pages and not page titles; existing notes need page-by-page formatting.
