Maryland Font: University and Athletics Typography Compared

Compare University of Maryland institutional and athletics typography, identify Terrafont’s all-capitals role, and separate original fonts from documented alternatives.

This guide scopes the University of Maryland and Maryland Athletics. Choose the institutional, athletic or campaign context first; one word on a jersey does not identify the typeface for every university document.

01

The university separates institutional type from campaign display

UMD’s official typography page identifies Bembo and Interstate as core institutional faces. It assigns Interstate Bold to emphasis and headings and Light to body copy, with additional cuts for graphic quotations and facts. The page separately limits the Fearlessly Forward campaign’s Druk Heavy Italic to headlines. It also identifies open-source alternatives, including Crimson Pro, Overpass and Inter in specific roles; these alternatives are not the original proprietary families.

02

Athletics has a different hierarchy of display and reading roles

The official athletics guide identifies Terrafont as an all-capitals face with angular serifs for primary athletic emphasis. It names Tusker for graphical elements, Wallsmith as script, Interstate for body text and Bembo for specified campus facility identification. For an athletic-information study, separate the team headline, score or date and longer explanatory copy. Check the actual resources for each role rather than reproducing a jersey treatment across an entire paragraph.

03

Select the right resource and compare your actual wording

Keep a note of whether the project belongs to institutional communications, athletics or a particular campaign before acquiring assets. For long names and small supporting text, proof the complete content at output size. The Inter profile is an actual independent font named among UMD’s alternatives, while Cormorant Garamond is only a separate comparison, not an approved Bembo replacement asserted here. Our copyable Unicode lettering styles change characters; they cannot install Terrafont, Bembo or the university’s other font resources.

The Louisville typography guide provides a separate example of an institution distinguishing foundational type from campaign faces. Its named resources belong to that institution, rather than serving as Maryland replacements.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Is Terrafont Maryland’s general body-copy font?

The athletics source assigns it an all-capitals display role and identifies Interstate for body copy.

Are the local previews the university’s original fonts?

They are independent font profiles. Inter appears among the university’s documented alternative options; the guide does not preview the proprietary originals.
