ITC Fonts: Library History, Family Names and Original Sources

Understand ITC font names and library history, find specific family guides, and distinguish publisher identity from a typeface, style or downloadable font file.

ITC identifies International Typeface Corporation, not one universal alphabet. Keep the complete family name and designer credit when choosing an ITC resource; its library contains different designs for very different typography tasks.

01

ITC is a library identity rather than a single drawing style

The ITC foundry account describes collaboration with designers and licensing a typeface library. In Herb Lubalin’s account preserved by Lubalin 100, he recalls a 1970 collaboration involving Aaron Burns, their company and Photo-Lettering that formed International Typeface Corporation. That is publishing history. It does not mean Lubalin personally drew every ITC family or that all designs share the same alphabet, proportions or character set.

02

Start a comparison with the full family and intended role

For a specific project, follow the ITC Benguiat guide or ITC Franklin Gothic guide rather than asking an application for a font called only ITC. For a typewriter-related design, ITC American Typewriter is another separate family. Record the selected edition and style along with the name; a library prefix alone cannot tell a collaborator which file to use. Inspect original family specimens for actual characters instead of relying on a retailer’s broad classification.

03

Keep the source, file and copied text distinct

Use the original publisher resource to investigate the family and terms appropriate to your project. A family with ITC in its name is not automatically a free download, and an independent comparison on this site does not distribute the original. When preparing an editable document, retain the exact family and style choices in the handoff. For a separate caption that needs decorative characters, the homepage’s copy and paste font generator offers Unicode styling; it does not install an ITC family or transfer its original letterforms to another service.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Is ITC a single font I can select for any design?

It identifies a typeface-library and publishing context. Select the actual family and style needed for your project.

Does every ITC font have the same designer?

No. Consult the specific family’s credits rather than treating a shared library identity as a universal designer attribution.
