ITC Franklin Gothic: background and attribution
Victor Caruso’s ITC Franklin Gothic develops the early American sans-serif lineage of Morris Fuller Benton. The ParaType account distinguishes Cyrillic work by Isay Slutsker and Tatiana Lyskova in 1995 and later narrow resources by Slutsker and Dmitry Kirsanov in 2000.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The ITC interpretation has expanded weights, a large x-height and somewhat narrowed proportions. The linked ParaType edition has its own language and branch history; it should not be silently equated with every Franklin Gothic resource bundled with office software.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a headline, a table entry and an ordinary paragraph. Source Sans 3 and Open Sans provide independent sans comparisons. Check script support and the longest line before selecting an alternative for an existing document.
For independent comparisons, try Source Sans 3 and Open Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
