ITC Bookman: background and attribution

Edward Benguiat redesigned Bookman for ITC in the 1970s. The publisher describes a larger x-height, revised contrast and expanded italic and swash resources. ITC Bookman is a specific revival within a broader Bookman lineage; it should not be treated as identical to Bookmania or every earlier Bookman release.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Inspect the actual edition’s italic and alternate characters before building a heading around them. Features shown in historical specimens are not a guarantee that a particular installed digital file exposes the same resources.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare an upright chapter title, an italic subtitle and a full paragraph. Lora and Alice provide independently designed serif comparisons. Keep the column width fixed while assessing line endings, then tune the size for the intended use.

For independent comparisons, try Lora and Alice. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
