Bookman Old Style is one identified Bookman edition
Microsoft traces Bookman Old Style to A C Phemister’s Oldstyle Antique, made around 1858 for Miller and Richard. Its account describes the Monotype roman as based on earlier Lanston Monotype and ATF models, with a separately redrawn italic. The record credits Ong Chong Wah for the documented digital edition.
A request saying only Bookman Bold can be ambiguous. This guide identifies Microsoft’s documented Bookman Old Style Bold. It does not equate that edition with ITC Bookman or Bookmania. Compare the full name in the source document rather than selecting a download on the shared historical label alone.
Choose the actual Bold or Bold Italic member
Microsoft explicitly lists Bookman Old Style, Bold, Italic and Bold Italic. Its description places the design in the transitional category despite Old Style appearing in the name. A family label and a weight are therefore useful identification details, not a complete technical classification by themselves.
Compare a heading in the supplied Bold with an ordinary paragraph in the accompanying text style. Include an italic phrase separately so the distinction between weight and slant remains clear. If the word shape becomes crowded at a narrow column width, review the layout instead of assuming a different Bookman edition will preserve the same spacing.
Follow the edition’s official record and compare independent text faces
Use the Microsoft family record for the documented resources, styles and licensing links. This site does not supply Bookman Old Style files or promise that a swash download under a related name is this edition.
For independent reading-text studies, compare Lora and Crimson Text. They are separately named designs, not matching replacements. Use a full paragraph with punctuation and numbers, then judge the heading and body together. The book typography guide treats those roles separately.
Your questions, answered.
Is Bookman Bold always Bookman Old Style Bold?
No. A short request may omit the edition. Confirm the complete family name; this guide addresses the Microsoft-documented Old Style edition.
Are ITC Bookman and Bookmania simply other names for this download?
Do not treat them as identical resources. Their separate guides identify their own publisher accounts and design scopes.
