What this style means
A book title, chapter opener and sustained reading page require different checks. There is no single font or point size used for every book, language or publication format.
The collection is a starting point for comparing letterforms. It does not promise that a font used for one project, brand or period is identical to any of these families.
Compare the families and their references
EB Garamond revisits a historical text tradition, Alegreya was developed with literature in mind and Faustina belongs to an editorial series. Their source backgrounds explain the selection without making them interchangeable.
Explore the full profiles for EB Garamond, Alegreya, Faustina. Each includes its own project description and source license, so you can judge the actual design rather than the category name alone.
Try it in a real layout
Try several paragraphs at the intended page width with italics, punctuation and numbers. Compare the reading texture before designing the chapter title. An e-book and a fixed-page print file may require different decisions.
Use the same wording and approximate size in each specimen. The size and tracking controls help you inspect the design; the PNG is a visual reference rather than a complete page layout.
Downloads, copying and next steps
Open a family’s official font page from its specimen when you want the font files. The selected source distributions include open licenses; review the license included with the specific files you obtain, especially if you plan to modify or redistribute them.
Copying ordinary letters does not carry these typefaces to a different app. Use a font-aware design tool or export an image when the appearance matters. For the character-substitution alternative, read Unicode text versus real fonts.
Treat a publisher’s family examples as suggestions, not a majority statistic
KDP’s paperback help lists several possible reading-text families, including Centaur, Garamond, Hightower Text and Palatino Linotype. It explicitly treats its recommendations as suggestions based on common usage. That is a publisher’s practical shortlist, not a survey proving that most books use any one of those families.
Separate the editable manuscript from the final reading page when asking what a book uses. The author’s drafting preference need not be the typeface selected for the published edition. If you are identifying a particular book, note its publisher, edition and page role; a cover title and interior paragraph may use different resources. The EB Garamond specimen is one independently named design, not proof that every source mentioning Garamond means this exact release.
Check real italic and bold resources before final paperback delivery
KDP’s font help describes faux-font errors when bold or italic formatting calls for a face that does not actually exist in the submitted resources. It also notes that rejected fonts may remain in less obvious locations such as style definitions, headers, footers, punctuation or line breaks. These production details explain why changing the visible body paragraph alone may not address every font error.
Include an italic sentence, an emphasized word, a chapter heading and a running header in the sample you prepare. Identify the family and actual styles assigned to each role rather than assuming a toolbar effect proves the matching face is available. If a font is replaced, inspect the entire page system for changed line endings and spacing. The book size and spacing guide treats scale separately, while the PDF embedding guide explains the resource-delivery question.
Your questions, answered.
What font size should every book use?
There is no universal size. Evaluate the individual design, page dimensions, audience, language and publication requirements.
Are these live previews free to use?
Yes. You can edit and compare the specimens here without payment. Use each official source link to download the font and read the included license.
Why do copied words look different in another app?
The previews use actual fonts loaded on this page. Ordinary clipboard text carries the characters, not a requirement for another app to render the same font.
