For a film script, Courier at 12 points is the conventional starting point documented by screenplay-formatting sources. Script here means the reading document, not connected handwriting. Use the receiving organization’s requirements and your actual screenplay application together; the family name alone does not determine every margin, indent or page break.

01

Why Courier is the usual starting point

Final Draft’s formatting guide specifies Courier at 12 points. This typewriter-derived, fixed-width convention helps maintain a familiar page rhythm across action, scene headings and dialogue. It does not mean that any monospaced font has matching metrics or that choosing a font completes the formatting.

Use the Final Draft guide alongside the requirements of the person or organization receiving your script.

02

A free source: Courier Prime

Courier Prime was designed by Alan Dague-Greene for John August and Quote-Unquote Apps. Its creator page describes optimization for 12-point screenplay use and metrics intended to match Courier and Courier Final Draft. It offers Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic resources under the Open Font License.

Use the intended font files rather than a similarly named substitute. The Courier New guide covers another family you may encounter in existing documents.

03

Keep the template and page structure consistent

Set font, size, margins and paragraph styles together. A scene heading, dialogue block and action paragraph have different roles; changing their indents to squeeze a draft into fewer pages changes more than its appearance.

Before sending, examine a representative PDF page containing each kind of element. Check that dialogue has not gained unexpected line breaks and that page numbers and scene headings remain in place. A timing estimate based on page count is a convention, not an exact measurement of a finished scene.

04

Check the exact Courier edition in the writing application

Courier Prime’s creator describes metrics intended to match screenplay Courier resources, but that is not a guarantee that every application and font edition preserves identical pages. Final Draft’s own support account warns that third-party fonts, including Courier variants, can change pagination between computers and recommends its Courier Final Draft resource for that workflow. Keep those source positions attributed rather than treating a shared Courier name as proof of interchangeability.

Before a handoff, record the actual font, template and application version. Compare a representative page with action, dialogue and a page break in the exported PDF. If the draft changes length, inspect the resource and paragraph settings before trying to recover the old count by shrinking text or altering margins.

05

Compare fonts for the right purpose

Source Code Pro and Roboto Mono are useful examples of fixed-width typography, but they are not guaranteed screenplay-metric replacements. Use the monospaced font guide to understand that distinction.

For the submitted screenplay, follow the recipient’s specification. For posters, pitch artwork or title graphics, choose display typography separately rather than applying it throughout the reading draft.

06

Follow the recipient’s guide without inventing one universal rule

The Academy’s screenwriting-resources page says professional formats show minor variations while retaining a recognizable overall structure. Its list of possible first-impression problems includes non-Courier body typography, excessive bold and overly long descriptive passages; it also cautions that reactions differ and that such faults do not automatically disqualify a strong script. Treat that as the source’s contextual advice, not a substitute for a particular current competition’s rules. Keep submission requirements separate from decorative title-page or promotional-art decisions.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

What font are screenplays written in?

Courier at 12 points is the conventional starting point documented by Final Draft. Follow any explicit submission specification supplied by the recipient.

Is there a free screenplay font?

Courier Prime is available from Quote-Unquote Apps under the Open Font License. Its creator page provides the original download and specimen.

Can any monospaced font replace Courier?

Fixed character widths alone do not establish identical metrics, line breaks or accepted submission formatting. Use an appropriate Courier resource and a screenplay template.

Does every Courier variant preserve the same screenplay page count?

Do not assume that. The creator’s intended metrics and a specific application’s behavior are different evidence. Keep the actual font and template with the project and inspect the delivered PDF.
