What this style means
A newspaper page has several typographic jobs: masthead, headline, summary and sustained reading. Those jobs do not need the same family, and a specific newspaper’s title lettering may be a custom or licensed design.
The collection is a starting point for comparing letterforms. It does not promise that a font used for one project, brand or period is identical to any of these families.
Compare the families and their references
News Cycle revisits a newspaper-sans tradition, Faustina was designed for editorial work, and Old Standard TT offers a different serif texture. Compare a headline and a paragraph separately rather than choosing from the title alone.
Explore the full profiles for News Cycle, Faustina, Old Standard TT. Each includes its own project description and source license, so you can judge the actual design rather than the category name alone.
Separate text, headline and compact-information resources
Commercial Type’s Guardian collection documents distinct families for headline, text and small informational roles, originally developed for the newspaper’s 2005 redesign. Its 2013 Guardian Sans Text account describes a middle ground for longer reading and gives sidebars, maps, information graphics and some captions as uses within that publication. This is a specific editorial system, not the font used by every newspaper. The independent News Cycle, Faustina and Old Standard TT specimens here are separate designs for comparison, not Guardian files.
Try it in a real layout
Test column width, line spacing, numbers and italics using representative copy. A heavy headline can pair with a quieter text face, but small body copy needs its own careful review. For a vintage effect, keep texture away from dense information.
Use the same wording and approximate size in each specimen. The size and tracking controls help you inspect the design; the PNG is a visual reference rather than a complete page layout.
Downloads, copying and next steps
Open a family’s official font page from its specimen when you want the font files. The selected source distributions include open licenses; review the license included with the specific files you obtain, especially if you plan to modify or redistribute them.
Copying ordinary letters does not carry these typefaces to a different app. Use a font-aware design tool or export an image when the appearance matters. For the character-substitution alternative, read Unicode text versus real fonts.
Choose newspaper sizes by role and proof, not a universal number
Commercial Type’s Guardian Sans Text specimen includes examples labeled 8/10 pt: the first number identifies nominal type size and the second the baseline spacing used in that specimen. This is a documented comparison setting, not proof of one compulsory body size for the Guardian or all newspapers.
For an original newsletter or newspaper-style layout, prepare a headline, a short standfirst, two body columns and a caption. Keep their roles distinct and print the whole page at actual size. Compare a long paragraph in the actual intended family before shrinking it to force more copy into a column. Inspect the caption and date as carefully as the headline. Retain an editable draft with the font names and settings, and use the size converter only for nominal units rather than assuming it measures visible letter height. For general print legibility, continue with minimum print sizes.
Your questions, answered.
What font do all newspapers use?
There is no single newspaper font. Publications use different systems and often separate display lettering from body text.
Are these live previews free to use?
Yes. You can edit and compare the specimens here without payment. Use each official source link to download the font and read the included license.
Why do copied words look different in another app?
The previews use actual fonts loaded on this page. Ordinary clipboard text carries the characters, not a requirement for another app to render the same font.
Is there one standard newspaper font size?
This guide does not prescribe one. Distinguish headline, body and compact-information roles, then proof the actual family, column width and output. A foundry specimen setting is an example, not a universal newspaper requirement.
