Whizbang: background and attribution

Studio Daedalus first developed WhizBang in 1993. Its creator describes an interpretation of hand lettering associated with comics of the 1960s and 1970s. Later releases expanded the styles and character set, including lowercase; the current creator account identifies the OTF and TTF bundle as version 2.1.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The official specimen documents upright, oblique, bold and bold-oblique treatments. Use the current bundle’s character set to check needed letters and symbols. A historical specimen’s copyright dates describe that specimen and should not be mistaken for a promise that every current package is unchanged.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Prepare a short gag-strip exchange with a caption and an emphasized word. Keep the balloon shape and reading order visible while comparing styles. Choose deliberate line breaks instead of distorting the letters to make every line fill the same width.

For independent comparisons, try Patrick Hand and Kalam. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
