Warnock: background and attribution
Robert Slimbach designed Warnock for Adobe Originals and named it after Adobe co-founder John Warnock. Adobe presents it as a composition family rather than a single display design, with coordinated resources for several typographic roles. The project’s connection with desktop publishing is part of its naming background.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Warnock Pro includes Latin, Cyrillic and Greek resources, multiple weights and optical-size ranges. The listed Caption, Subhead and Display resources represent different drawings for different settings. Selecting a Caption resource is distinct from merely reducing the point size of a Display style.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Build a page with a title, a paragraph and a footnote. Compare the appropriate optical resources at their intended sizes, keeping the words fixed. Inspect the small punctuation and fine strokes in the footnote, then document both the weight and optical label so later edits preserve the same treatment.
For independent comparisons, try Source Serif 4 and Lora. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
