Vitesse: background and attribution

Jonathan Hoefler designed Vitesse in 2000 for Esquire. His design account credits contributions from Tobias Frere-Jones and Andy Clymer and documents an expansion for Wired in 2006. Forza became a related sans-serif companion, with its own distinct family identity.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Its slab-serif construction is organized around softened barrel-like curves rather than ordinary circular geometry. Compare the shape inside the letters with the heavier serifs outside. Related working titles in early copies describe development history, not necessarily current products to seek out separately.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try an editorial title and a short information panel. Compare the family’s stronger weights with a quieter reading companion at the final page size. Record the exact style and resource when replacing an early project font with a current package.

For independent comparisons, try Arvo and Rokkitt. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
