01

Vinyl describes a material and workflow

There is no single font required for vinyl. Start with the wording, finished width and the type of material and cutting process. A script with tiny loops and a plain bold heading may both look good on screen but require different preparation to become usable cut lettering.

02

Understand kerning and connected letters

Cricut’s text documentation describes automatic kerning support and a Kerned font filter. It says touching letters within kerned text weld automatically on the project preview while remaining editable on the Canvas. When letters are ungrouped into separate objects, the documented process instead requires Weld or Combine > Unite to merge overlapping shapes. Consult the official text guide for your platform’s controls.

03

Check the actual smallest details

Use the actual name or phrase, including punctuation. Inspect narrow gaps, small counters and detached dots at the intended physical output size. Do not assume a font’s headline preview proves how the material will weed. A small production sample with your material and machine provides more useful evidence than enlarging an alphabet on screen.

04

Compare independent lettering options

Try Anton as a heavy separate-letter direction and Yellowtail as a script comparison. Neither preview is a machine-ready cut file. Keep an editable text copy while preparing the production shapes, then follow the chosen application’s workflow. Continue with the Cricut font guide and script-versus-block comparison for related choices.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Is vinyl a font file format?

No. It describes a material or production workflow. The selected font and the prepared cut shapes are separate resources.

Do all script letters weld automatically?

Cricut documents automatic welding for touching letters in supported kerned text, with different handling after letters are ungrouped. Follow the official workflow.

Is a preview image ready for a cutting machine?

No. Prepare the lettering in the appropriate design software and inspect the final shapes at the intended size.
