Use Downloaded Fonts in Cricut Design Space

Choose the right control, understand its scope and keep your text editable.

For Design Space on desktop, a downloaded font is used as a system font after it is installed on the computer. That is different from using the image-upload workflow.

01

Make the font a system font

Obtain the actual font resource and install it through the computer’s font workflow. The Windows and Mac guides explain those steps.

Keep the source and style names with the project. An image of letters is not the same asset as an editable typeface.

02

Choose it in Design Space

Select the Text tool or an existing text box and open the Font menu. Use the system-font index to find families installed on the device. Choose the family and an available style.

Cricut’s text documentation also explains spacing and kerning options. Compare the actual word after choosing the font rather than assuming the initial spacing is the final design.

03

Plan for cutting or writing

Try the full wording at the intended physical size. Inspect thin strokes, small counters and connections before relying on an ornate script. A browser text preview does not establish cut performance or machine settings.

Keep an editable copy so spacing can be adjusted without starting from a flattened image.

04

Compare source designs first

Use the script and signature collection for ideas and the family profiles for background and official download links.

Font selection, image conversion and physical output are separate decisions. Choose the workflow that matches the material and project rather than treating every upload control as interchangeable.

05

Find a known family without confusing search with image identification

Cricut’s August 2026 text documentation describes desktop font-picker tabs, a search field, keyword buttons and filters. Use the system-font index for a family installed on your device. Its help also says that the kerned-font filter can be deselected before searching for a font that is otherwise absent. This is a catalog-search workflow, not automatic recognition of lettering in a photograph.

If you know the name, start with that name and the correct source index, then review active filters before assuming installation failed. If you only have a photograph or flattened graphic, use the image font-identification guide to investigate the lettering; the Design Space font picker and this guide do not identify an unknown image automatically.

Once the family is located, inspect the actual style offered for your task. Cricut documents Bold, Italic or Writing choices where available. A Writing style is a separate supplied choice, so finding a family name alone does not prove that the needed writing treatment exists. Keep a short text sample beside the intended project element before proceeding to the material workflow.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Do I upload a font through the image uploader?

System fonts are installed on the device and selected through Design Space’s font controls.

Can I adjust spacing after selecting a family?

Cricut’s text controls include letter-spacing and kerning-related options. Inspect your actual word.

Does this preview guarantee a clean cut?

No. Evaluate the design at its physical size and use the project’s appropriate machine and material workflow.
