01

Tactic Sans: background and attribution

Richard Miller developed Tactic Sans as a wide-ranging sans serif system for Miller Type Foundry. The publisher’s concept emphasizes versatility across widths and weights, including military and sports-oriented display work. That positioning describes its design purpose rather than an official connection to a particular organization.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Seven weights across three widths, each with italics, create forty-two styles. Extended Latin and Cyrillic support sit alongside alternate letters, tabular lining figures, fractions and other numeric resources. Width, weight and figure selection solve separate layout problems.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a short title at normal and extended widths while keeping the same wording. Use tabular figures where scores or times need to align. Inspect the chosen style at small sizes before using a display setting for detailed information.

For independent comparisons, try Russo One and Michroma. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
