Superclarendon: background and attribution
Raymond Larabie released Superclarendon in October 2007 after a commercial commission that did not require exclusivity. He describes a personal interpretation of nineteenth-century Clarendon, squaring the forms without turning them into a technological design. The full family included its slanted resources from the beginning.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Chunky slab serifs and squared terminals are central to the design. The creator documents character corrections in 2021 and naming and language-support changes in November 2024. Older examples and current files can therefore differ in labels and details.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a short headline, an italic-style subheading and a paragraph. Inspect accents and punctuation in the exact copy. If reproducing an older project, record the release rather than relying only on a weight name from an old screenshot.
For independent comparisons, try Arvo and Rokkitt. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
