Stanley: background and attribution

Ludovic Balland developed Stanley with Yoann Minet, with Balland’s studio recording the project in 2012. Times New Roman supplied a reference point, but Stanley develops its own sharper and more angular character. The source account emphasizes efficient text settings and a strong relationship between the letters’ interior spaces and their serifs.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The design uses short ascenders and descenders with open, sharply defined counters. Its capital drawings can create an additional level of hierarchy, while the Poster treatment pushes contrast further. Compare the exact style at the intended size rather than assuming a display resource and a small-text resource behave identically.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Set a paragraph with a short title and footnote. Compare the hierarchy while keeping the body text at its intended reading size. Inspect fine serifs and the balance of the capital letters, then compare a Poster setting separately if the project also needs a large opening headline.

For independent comparisons, try Source Serif 4 and Lora. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
