01

Serifa: background and attribution

Adrian Frutiger developed Serifa for Bauer in the 1960s, applying structural ideas related to his Univers sans-serif work to a slab-serif family. The relationship is a design reference, not a claim that one can reproduce Serifa by adding rectangular serifs to an installed Univers file.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Substantial serifs and balanced underlying proportions distinguish its texture from a high-contrast display serif. Digital editions from different publishers can have different inventories, names and coverage. Inspect the exact edition’s original styles rather than transferring a package count from another distributor.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a short editorial heading and a reading paragraph. Inspect serif spacing and numeral alignment at actual size. Use the same words and line width when comparing an independent slab-serif alternative so differences in density remain visible.

For independent comparisons, try Arvo and Rokkitt. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
