Sentinel: background and attribution
Jonathan Hoefler designed this Sentinel in 2004 for Texas Monthly. Hoefler & Co. published the family in 2009 and expanded its character set and ornaments in 2020. Its antique or slab-serif references were developed into a coordinated range with both romans and italics.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The publisher emphasizes the text role as well as the prominent slab serifs. Compare a reading weight and its italic in a real paragraph before selecting a darker headline cut. Sentinel is also the name of an unrelated Comicraft design, so publisher attribution matters when finding the right specimen.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a feature headline, a pull quote and a paragraph in a magazine layout. Check whether the italic emphasis remains distinct without disrupting the reading rhythm. Bitter and Arvo are independent slab-serif comparisons, with their own proportions and stroke treatment.
For independent comparisons, try Bitter and Arvo. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
