Seaford: background and attribution
Microsoft introduced Seaford in 2021 as one of five commissioned candidates for a new Office default. The company credits Tobias Frere-Jones, Nina Stössinger and Fred Shallcrass. Their account describes seeking the familiar warmth of older serif text faces within a sans serif design, emphasizing different letter shapes rather than repeating symmetrical forms.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The design uses organic, asymmetric forms and focuses strongly on lowercase branches, bowls and terminals. Its old-style text influences do not mean it has conventional serifs. The creators describe a balance between comfortable familiarity and more structured italic construction rather than merely making every shape softer.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a paragraph with a heading and italic emphasis in the actual application. Judge word shapes, line breaks and apparent size against a neutral sans serif. For the later Office default family, see Aptos; Seaford's place in the original candidate group is a separate part of the history.
For independent comparisons, try Alegreya Sans and Source Sans 3. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
