Aptos: history and design context
Steve Matteson designed Aptos for Microsoft with mid-twentieth-century Swiss typography as a reference. The system includes separate text, display and condensed choices, which serve different document roles.
The official family entry provides the source account and the listed edition’s information. A broader family name may cover other releases; keep the exact version clear when comparing files or documenting a project.
Microsoft Design’s July 2023 announcement explains that Bierstadt was renamed Aptos. The earlier candidate name and the released family therefore belong in the same history, rather than separate pages claiming unrelated designs. Keep the actual edition and style names explicit when obtaining files.
What to look for in your layout
Compare a paragraph, slide title and table. Keep the chosen branch explicit when sharing a template; Aptos Display and the text family should not be assumed to have identical spacing.
Use representative wording: include names, punctuation, numbers and any script you need. A family name alone does not establish that a particular installed edition contains every required character or typographic feature.
Compare open-license alternatives
The editable comparison specimens use Inter and Source Sans 3. These are independent designs selected for a related role or mood. They are not renamed copies, guaranteed metric replacements or claims of exact similarity to Aptos.
Start with the same wording and size in each specimen, then compare line length, counters, emphasis and overall texture. For a wider set of examples, explore the related style guide. Each alternative’s profile links to its own background and included license.
Preview, download sources and compatibility
The local preview asks the browser to load a named face already on your device. If that cannot happen, the preview is unavailable; it does not silently present an alternative as Aptos. The control shows only the installed default face and does not expose every weight, optical design or OpenType feature.
Use the official family entry to investigate available editions, supplied products and acquisition routes. This site does not provide Aptos font files or promise a free redistribution license. Copying ordinary text does not carry a font into another app. Read typeface versus font and font file types when preparing an editable handoff.
Compare Aptos with Calibri using the actual branch and document role
Microsoft Design’s February 2024 account explains that spreadsheet compatibility with Calibri helped motivate a narrower Aptos version. That is a branch-specific design decision, not a guarantee that replacing every Calibri instance with ordinary Aptos preserves the layout. The account also describes deliberately distinguishing lowercase l from capital I and adjusting individual letter shapes for the new family’s character.
Compare the exact style names in your application before changing a template. For a spreadsheet, include a narrow text column, a long heading and the relevant number formats. For a report, include a paragraph, a heading and an italic phrase. Keep the document dimensions steady and note which lines or cells change.
The Calibri profile identifies the other family separately. If the task is visual preference, compare the same text at a comfortable size. If the task is maintaining an existing template, inspect its spacing and page or cell boundaries. Neither a newer default nor a related narrow branch makes all the family’s styles interchangeable.
Your questions, answered.
Can I preview Aptos here?
The local specimen can use a matching face installed on your device, if the browser can load it. Otherwise it reports that the face is unavailable. The separately named alternative specimens still work as independent comparisons.
Does this page provide a free Aptos download?
No font files for this named family are supplied here. Follow the official family source to investigate the edition, availability and applicable terms. The open-license comparison fonts have separate source links.
Can I copy and paste Aptos into another app?
Ordinary copied text does not preserve the typeface. Use an app with the appropriate font available, or export a visual preview when an image meets your needs.
