Sabon: background and attribution
Adobe’s account describes Jan Tschichold’s Sabon design from 1964 and its joint release through Stempel, Linotype and Monotype. The roman draws on a Garamond specimen printed by Konrad F. Berner; the italic follows Robert Granjon’s types. The family name relates to printer Jacques Sabon through that specimen history.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Roman and italic resources have distinct historical models. Compare their proportions within a paragraph rather than expecting the italic to be only a mechanically slanted roman. A later Sabon-branded release can have its own outlines and spacing.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a chapter opening, a paragraph with italic emphasis and a footnote. EB Garamond and Cormorant Garamond provide separate related comparisons. Check the actual reading size and column width before choosing a substitute.
For independent comparisons, try EB Garamond and Cormorant Garamond. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
