01

Publico: background and attribution

Publico is Christian Schwartz and Paul Barnes’s family from Commercial Type, developed with additional collaborators credited in the collection. Its publisher traces the project through work leading toward the Guardian redesign and its later completion for the Lisbon newspaper Público. Its earlier working name, Haçienda, describes a development stage rather than a separate current download.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Compare Text, Headline and Banner branches at the sizes for which you need them. Condensed and other width choices solve different composition problems. The shared project history does not mean every Publico resource has identical spacing, contrast or language coverage.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a newspaper-style heading, a reading paragraph and a caption. Choose the branch before fine-tuning size and spacing. When changing from one optical role to another, inspect the resulting line breaks instead of assuming the same word widths.

For independent comparisons, try Source Serif 4 and Lora. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
