Prison Font: Astigmatic’s Letterpress Revival and Two Unicase Modes

Brian J. Bonislawsky’s Astigmatic Prison account describes a digital revival of antique letterpress lettering with grunge variations. It explains that the original six-font family was consolidated into three OpenType fonts in the Pro family. A resource labelled Prison Pro therefore needs a different checklist from an older separate Unicase file. Before composing a poster, record the exact edition and style, rather than assuming that every font with Prison in its name shares this construction or feature arrangement.

For the Pro resources, the maker assigns the original faux-unicase appearance to Contextual Alternates and true unicase, without ascending characters, to Stylistic Alternates. Set the same mixed-case phrase in three copies: unchanged, contextual alternates enabled, and stylistic alternates enabled. Inspect the overall top contour and the forms that change. Keep those controls separate until you understand their results. If an application offers no working feature control, consult the glyph palette and the edition’s documentation; changing the text to uppercase is not a substitute for these designed forms.

The Pro account also specifies fractions, superior and inferior forms, ordinals, and tabular and proportional figures. Try 1st EDITION and a short time list in a separate information block, selecting the number treatment deliberately before applying a distressed headline treatment. Check whether the chosen numerals suit a column or a sentence rather than treating all figure options as interchangeable. The homepage’s copyable character treatments replace Unicode characters; they do not carry Prison’s font-specific texture or OpenType substitutions into another app. Keep the plain wording available beside the final graphic.
