01

Letterpress names a process

MoMA defines letterpress as relief printing: raised surfaces are inked and pressed onto paper. Its definition includes text and other images cut from metal or wood. A letterpress font search therefore needs a practical distinction. You may want type for an actual press, a digital revival of historical lettering, or a texture that suggests an inked impression. Those are different production choices.

02

Choose letterforms before adding wear

A rough edge is an appearance choice, rather than the definition of letterpress. Set the complete headline first and inspect spacing, counters and punctuation without added distress. Compare a solid version with the textured version at the final size. If worn areas remove the features that distinguish letters, reduce the effect or restrict it to larger display text while keeping dates and contact information clear.

03

Discuss physical production with the printer

For an actual letterpress job, show the printer the intended wording, size, paper and color arrangement before finalizing artwork. Ask what file preparation and minimum details their specific process can reproduce. The fact that a design looks convincing on screen does not establish how it will print. Keep a clean editable source and review a production proof rather than treating an artificial shadow as a physical impression.

04

Keep related printing terms distinct

The wood font guide explains physical wood type and digital interpretations. Woodcut concerns a carved relief image, while letterpress describes the printing operation that can use raised type. Record the font source and license separately from the printer’s production instructions. For a purely digital poster, judge texture against its actual viewing size instead of claiming that the image was made by a historical press.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Does a letterpress font automatically produce an impression in paper?

No. A digital font supplies letter shapes. A physical impression depends on the printing process and materials.

Must letterpress lettering have distressed edges?

No. Relief printing does not require an artificially worn digital texture.
