Poynter: background and attribution
Roger Black’s first-person account connects Poynter to newspaper typography research involving the Poynter Institute and Mario García. Mike Parker proposed looking back to Hendrik van den Keere’s earlier Dutch letterforms when contemporary printing exposed weaknesses in existing text choices. Black credits the resulting Poynter design to David Berlow and Tobias Frere-Jones.

Forms, styles and what to inspect
The collection’s newspaper context makes the relationship between letter shape, reproduction and reading size central to evaluation. Select the specific Poynter resource intended for the task rather than treating a whole editorial family as one undifferentiated file.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a realistic newspaper paragraph and short headline at the intended column width. Inspect punctuation, dark areas and spacing on the final output. Judge longer reading samples as well as isolated letters when choosing an editorial text face.
For independent comparisons, try Source Serif 4 and Lora. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
