PMN Caecilia: background and attribution
PMN Caecilia is Peter Matthias Noordzij’s slab serif family. The publisher traces its first sketches to his studies in The Hague in 1983; PMN represents his initials and Caecilia is his wife’s name. Its development led to a Linotype release in the early 1990s. Later sans serif work is a companion project, not a reason to classify the original as a sans.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The original family combines slab serifs with open counters, a substantial x-height and true italics. Compare the italic construction with the upright rather than assuming it is simply a slanted copy. Inspect small capitals, figure choices and language coverage in the particular resources you plan to use.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a reading passage, a subheading and a table of numbers. Compare the rhythm of a paragraph with the appearance of an isolated headline. When choosing an alternative, check new line breaks and page length instead of relying on an apparently similar slab serif silhouette.
For independent comparisons, try Arvo and Rokkitt. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
