Plantin: background and attribution
Frank Hinman Pierpont designed Plantin for Monotype in the early twentieth century. Adobe’s account links its model to the type collection of sixteenth-century Antwerp printer Christophe Plantin, rather than describing it as a direct drawing by that printer. The name and the later typeface belong to different historical stages.

Forms, styles and what to inspect
The source emphasizes a large x-height and a slightly condensed appearance in a paper-conserving text design. Compare apparent size and line endings at a fixed column width. A related historical role does not make Plantin an exact replacement for another book serif.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a textbook paragraph, a caption and a line of numerals. Lora and Source Serif 4 offer independent text-serif comparisons. Compare the real page before deciding whether a denser setting is useful.
For independent comparisons, try Lora and Source Serif 4. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
