Add and Use Fonts in Photoshop

Choose the right control, understand its scope and keep your text editable.

Photoshop uses available font resources in editable type layers. Adding a family through Adobe Fonts or the operating system is a different task from opening a picture of lettering.

01

Make the family available

Adobe Fonts are added to the computer through Creative Cloud desktop. Adobe’s font service documentation explains how those added families become available in desktop applications.

For another authorized font resource, use the appropriate system installation workflow. Keep the source and exact styles with the project rather than assuming an image file contains the typeface.

02

Apply a family to editable type

Choose the Horizontal or Vertical Type tool, select the text layer and use the font search control in the Options bar. Search by the exact family and choose the available style.

Adobe’s current instructions describe filters for available, Adobe and variable fonts. Review the style within its family rather than selecting from a similarly named resource.

03

Resolve missing-font situations

Adobe documents automatic activation for missing Adobe Fonts when the relevant service can provide them. For other missing resources, Type > Manage Missing Fonts offers replacement choices.

Review line breaks and text-box fit after replacement. A visually close family can still alter the layout.

04

Keep background and effect separate

Read the selected family’s library profile for its design background. The outline and neon tools demonstrate image treatments; they do not install editable Photoshop type.

Retain an editable text layer when a teammate needs to revise wording instead of receiving only flattened pixels.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Does a PNG add a Photoshop font?

No. It is an image, not an editable typeface resource.

Where are type styles selected?

Use the Type tool and font controls for the selected editable text layer.

Will substituting a missing font preserve every line break?

Not necessarily. Compare the layout after changing the available family or style.
