Read the project participant’s account
In Phillies Nation’s April 2024 firsthand interview, Phillies vice president of business affairs Howard Smith explains that Nike custom-designed the City Connect lettering. He describes a historical-to-edgy direction and repeating Liberty Bell cracks inside the characters. This is an attributed account from a participant, not a visual guess that a retail blackletter family is the original. The guide concerns that dated PHILLY treatment rather than every Phillies wordmark.
Keep an interior motif from breaking the word
For your own textured display word, compose an untextured version first. Introduce the internal motif away from the features that distinguish similar letters. Check whether a crack touches the character edge or only sits inside the fill; those choices produce different silhouettes. Keep a clean small-size version and a textured large version. A symbol can inform the internal details of lettering without replacing each character with a separate illustration.
Coordinate the display word with information text
Reserve the decorated word for the main line of an original poster. Put dates and ticket information in a quieter family so readers do not need to decode the same texture repeatedly. UnifrakturCook and Graduate are independent historical-display and collegiate comparisons, not Nike’s PHILLY original. The copyable lettering styles on the homepage provide Unicode substitutions for a caption; they do not recreate crack textures or export the uniform typeface. Use the jersey font guide for number-versus-wordmark research.
