Define what is being dated before choosing an answer
An old inscription, a printed page, a metal type design and a modern digital font file are different objects. Ask whether the question concerns the earliest surviving print, a particular printing technology, a letterform model or a currently usable font. A modern file can reproduce an older visual idea without being an ancient artifact. Record the place, process and surviving object alongside any date so a broad claim of oldest does not conceal a narrower category.
Printing history extends beyond European movable type
The Library of Congress describes Japan’s Hyakumanto darani scrolls, produced between 764 and 770, as among the world’s oldest surviving printed materials. Its 2023 account notes uncertainty over whether woodblocks or metal plates were used. These scrolls predate Gutenberg by centuries. They are evidence about printing, not proof that a modern downloadable Latin font is the world’s oldest typeface. Keep the language and production method attached to the historical example.
Place Gutenberg in the correct historical context
The Library of Congress identifies the Gutenberg Bible as the first great book printed in Western Europe using movable metal type, probably completed in Mainz late in 1455. Its Gothic type, predominantly 42-line double columns and hand-added color belong to a specific production context. That achievement should not be rewritten as the invention of all printing. When studying a reproduction, distinguish the repeatable printed letters from the decoration supplied by hand.
Use modern specimens as comparisons rather than artifacts
Compare EB Garamond, Cinzel and Special Elite below as different modern historical-looking directions, not a chronological list of the earliest fonts. Set one short passage in each and describe what changes: capitals, serif shapes, spacing and overall texture. For a historical project, start with a dated original from the relevant place and medium, then choose a modern implementation that serves the new text. Identify the actual digital family in the finished design instead of labelling it simply ancient.
Your questions, answered.
Is Gutenberg’s type the oldest font in the world?
That broad claim confuses categories. The Library of Congress documents much earlier printed material in Japan and describes Gutenberg’s achievement specifically in the context of Western European movable-metal-type book production.
Does an old-looking font file come from antiquity?
No. Its visual model and its digital implementation have separate histories. Check the named family’s documentation and the historical source independently.
