Mrs Eaves: background and attribution
Zuzana Licko designed Mrs Eaves in 1996 for Emigre. It revisits Baskerville through printed specimens, including their ink impression, rather than pursuing only the pristine metal outlines. Its name refers to Sarah Eaves, whom John Baskerville married.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Reduced contrast, relatively low x-height and generous spacing help establish this interpretation. Compare a short text block with a long paragraph: the source itself discusses the loose text texture. Do not assume that a Baskerville-related design will have the same fit as another revival.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a book cover title, a short quotation and a paragraph. Evaluate the apparent lowercase size before choosing a point value. Lora and Crimson Text provide independent serif comparisons with different proportions; neither is Mrs Eaves.
For independent comparisons, try Lora and Crimson Text. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
