Minion: background and attribution
Robert Slimbach’s Minion first appeared in 1990; Adobe’s account records later Cyrillic additions and a Pro OpenType release in 2000. Minion 3 is a subsequent development with further language coverage and refined optical-size branches.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The family draws on late Renaissance oldstyle type. Pro and Minion 3 should be identified as releases, with their own available styles and glyphs. This guide concerns Adobe’s type family; it does not supply lettering from the animated Minions characters.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
For a book layout, compare the body, notes and a chapter heading using their intended styles. Include the actual accents and symbols required by the text. Crimson Text and EB Garamond are independent oldstyle-oriented comparisons with their own histories.
For independent comparisons, try Crimson Text and EB Garamond. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
Official preview and font resources
Use Adobe Fonts to try the original and investigate the files, styles and terms for your intended workflow. This site does not distribute or serve Minion font software.
The editable alternatives here have their own source profiles and included licenses. For the difference between a font file and copied characters, read Unicode text versus fonts.
