Miller Display: background and attribution

Matthew Carter’s Miller Display reinterprets the nineteenth-century Scotch Roman tradition for headline roles. Adobe’s publisher account also credits the wider Miller development to contributors including Richard Lipton, Jill Pichotta, Tobias Frere-Jones and Cyrus Highsmith.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The Display branch sharpens serifs and increases contrast for titles, decks and pull quotes. It is distinct from choosing a text branch at a larger point value. Keep the edition, optical role and weight explicit when matching an existing editorial system.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a two-line magazine headline with a short deck. Check fine strokes on the final background and avoid assuming a display cut is suitable for dense small copy. Playfair Display and Noto Serif Display provide independent headline-serif comparisons.

For independent comparisons, try Playfair Display and Noto Serif Display. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
