Mercury: background and attribution
Mercury’s history includes Jonathan Hoefler’s 1996 design and later newspaper-production work credited by MoMA to Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones. The museum explains how grades helped different printing conditions produce a consistent result without forcing a new page layout.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Grades change darkness while preserving the space occupied by the text. They serve a different purpose from simply switching to a conventional heavier weight. Keep Mercury Text, its grades and the separate Display resources explicit when choosing a package.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a newspaper-style paragraph in more than one available grade using the same measure and size. Check whether line endings stay consistent, then judge darkness on the actual output. Evaluate a display heading separately from the body setting.
For independent comparisons, try Source Serif 4 and Lora. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
