Mencken: background and attribution

Jean François Porchez's Mencken family originated in a redesign for The Baltimore Sun. ZeCraft's project account explains that the design replaced earlier custom type and was organized into resources with specific editorial functions. The family name honors journalist H. L. Mencken's contributions to the newspaper.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Mencken Text uses lower contrast, open counters and an oblique axis, while Head uses a higher-contrast Didot-related direction and narrower headline options. The text capitals were shaped to harmonize with the heading resources. Those are different drawings for different roles, not simply one font enlarged and reduced.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a newspaper-style headline, subheading and multi-column passage. Select Text for the reading task before testing Head's contrast and width in titles. Check punctuation and numeral needs in the actual supplied edition, especially when replacing older files from a publication workflow.

For independent comparisons, try Source Serif 4 and Playfair Display. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
