Read the publication’s own formatting instructions first
There is no single font instruction shared by every publication. SFWA’s January 2005 manuscript-format article describes a historical preference for monospaced Courier and double spacing. In contrast, Lightspeed’s own submission portal accepts standard manuscript format but gives a screen-reading preference for 14-point Arial and single spacing. Record the target publication, the date you consulted its instructions, its required file type, font and spacing in a short checklist. These are specific examples, not a universal current rule or a claim that either publication is open to submissions.
Make a submission proof without redesigning the finished book
Keep a separate submission copy of the document. Apply the requested font and paragraph settings consistently, then inspect a page containing dialogue, an italic phrase, punctuation, a heading and a page number. Check headers and any pasted text as well as ordinary paragraphs; those areas can retain a different style. Review line breaks and page numbering after changing families. Cousine and Source Serif 4 offer independent monospaced and proportional comparisons here, not substitutes for a recipient’s expressly named font. Use the book font guide for the separate task of choosing the published reading page.
Distinguish the named Manuscript family and historic manuscript lettering
Sarid Ezra’s own Manuscript product offers hand-lettered Light, Regular and Bold resources. That is a named design product, not a publication’s submission standard. If your purpose is branding or a decorative heading, record that maker and compare the intended complete wording across its weights; do not assume a decorative resource improves the acceptability of a story manuscript. Historic book-hand illustration is another task, covered by the illuminated manuscript guide. The homepage Unicode lettering generator changes copyable characters rather than setting an editable submission document’s installed font.
Your questions, answered.
Must every manuscript use Courier?
No. The cited historical SFWA guidance and Lightspeed’s own screen-reading preference differ. Follow the intended recipient’s current instructions.
Is Sarid Ezra’s Manuscript a submission template?
No. It is a named hand-lettered font resource. A publication’s required document formatting is a separate matter.
