01

Identify the slab-serif stencil and handwritten namesake

MADType’s original Madison account credits Matthew Aaron Desmond and describes a slab-serif stencil. The Designs by Brielle author listing instead identifies a handwritten script under the same short name. These are separate resources, so an attribution or demo condition from one should not be transferred to the other. Compare their actual specimens rather than assuming that two files named Madison are alternate styles of a single family.

02

Keep Madison Antiqua’s metal-type history with that design

Linotype’s Madison Antiqua account describes a 1965 D. Stempel metal release based on Amts-Antiqua, crediting Heinrich Hoffmeister’s earlier work from 1909–1919. It places the design in magazine and newspaper text. This is a different historical lineage from Desmond’s stencil or Brielle’s script. The word Antiqua is therefore meaningful identification information, not a decorative suffix to drop when documenting the resource.

03

Choose a proof that answers your actual reading task

For a stencil-style title, compare its narrowest bridges and counters at the intended size without adding a second outline. For a handwritten note, inspect repeated letters and word gaps in the complete phrase. For editorial text, prepare a full paragraph with a date, quotation marks and an italic passage, then read it at output size. Those are three different decisions rather than one ranking of which Madison looks best. Stardos Stencil and EB Garamond offer independent comparisons for two of those roles. The homepage Unicode font-style generator produces pasteable character substitutions instead of the original Madison font files.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Who designed Madison?

The answer depends on the resource. MADType credits Matthew Aaron Desmond for the stencil; Designs by Brielle lists a separate script; Madison Antiqua has its own documented historical lineage.

Does Madison Antiqua’s history date every Madison font to 1965?

No. That source concerns the specifically named Stempel design. The unrelated stencil and handwritten resources require their own attribution.
