Louize: background and attribution
Matthieu Cortat’s Louize reinterprets the Augustaux associated with Louis Perrin and Francisque Rey’s nineteenth-century Lyon printing work. The 205TF specimen dates Louize to 2011. The foundry later documented a Display Condensed expansion in 2021 for magazine needs, a separate milestone from the original family.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Keep Louize, Louize Display and Louize Display Condensed distinct when choosing resources. The foundry’s project account describes the condensed expansion in Regular, Medium and Bold. Shared historical inspiration does not mean identical widths or reading-size behavior across the branches.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a reading paragraph with a larger magazine heading using the appropriate branch for each. Inspect the quieter text texture separately from a condensed display line. Preserve the exact edition and branch when handing over a layout, alongside its publisher license reference.
For independent comparisons, try Lora and EB Garamond. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
