Read the lettering references behind the family
The original Impallari project credits Pablo Impallari and Rodrigo Fuenzalida and explains its interest in midcentury American hand-lettered Caslon interpretations, citing Mortimer Leach’s Lettering for Advertising and Tommy Thompson’s How to Render Roman Letter Forms. It separates Text for web body copy from Display for large headlines. The current Text description and Display description retain that functional distinction. This is a modern project interpreting lettering traditions, not the original eighteenth-century font software.
Compare Text and Display in their actual roles
Prepare one page with a headline, several paragraphs, a caption and an emphasized phrase. Start the paragraph comparison with Text and the headline comparison with Display. Keep column width and wording consistent, then inspect how the paragraph texture and title details work together. Do not shrink a striking headline specimen and assume it has become a suitable body setting. If you change the family used for a role, inspect line endings and paragraph length rather than relying on the same numeric size.
Choose the actual release and keep comparison fonts labeled
Use the original project or its linked Google Fonts families to inspect the release, available styles and included license. The upstream project is licensed under SIL OFL1.1; read the accompanying file for the version you obtain. Lora and Source Serif 4 here are independent serif comparisons, not embedded Libre Caslon specimens. The homepage’s Unicode styles for a short editorial heading substitute copyable characters; they do not install Text or Display files or preserve their typographic features.
Your questions, answered.
Should I use Libre Caslon Text or Display for paragraphs?
The project specifically positions Text for web body copy and Display for headlines. Evaluate them in those roles using your real content and output conditions.
Is Libre Caslon simply another file of William Caslon’s original types?
No. The project describes a modern interpretation informed by midcentury hand-lettered Caslons and separately designed Text and Display uses.
