Labyrinth Font: Shiva Nallaperumal’s Working Title and Calcula

Explore the sources, compare the examples and choose the right approach.

Follow the Labyrinth working-title project into its documented Calcula context, then plan word-block, pattern and layer proofs. Keep this experimental Latin design separate from unrelated maze alphabets or an Arabic text font.

01

Read the working title alongside the published project

In his Kulture Shop interview, Shiva Nallaperumal calls Labyrinth a working title, describes collaboration with Tal Leming, and explains context-sensitive interlocking inspired by geometric Kufic. His first-person Calcula development essay documents the resulting project at Typotheque: a five-by-five grid, letters adapting to neighbors, Leming’s ligature-building program and Frederik Berlaen’s scripts for additional styles. The current Calcula family page lists Solid, Stripes, Stone, Stone Shadow and Shadow, with Latin availability. Use that published product name when investigating resources rather than assuming a current separate Labyrinth release.

02

Proof changing word blocks rather than isolated alphabet samples

Begin with the actual short title and a second version containing the longest likely replacement word. Keep an ordinary plain-text copy beside both compositions. Because neighboring letters affect an interlocking design, a successful isolated capital does not establish that every word will assemble well. Inspect the whole block after each text revision, including the internal spaces and the outer silhouette. Label any manually adjusted artwork so a future editor does not assume retyping the words will reproduce every intervention automatically.

03

Separate a decorative pattern from the readable message

Create a pattern experiment from a short word or letter combination, then place the required headline and explanatory text outside it. Decide whether the pattern is intended to be read, discovered or simply seen as texture. If the wording carries essential information, provide a clear independent text version in the composition or its accessible presentation. The source of an idea in Arabic calligraphy does not by itself establish Arabic-script coverage; this publisher’s family page specifies Latin. Choose a documented script-supporting font for actual Arabic text.

04

Keep layers aligned and document the final composition

For a licensed Calcula composition, retain the exact words, style names and feature settings with the approved proof. Compare a single component with the intended layered treatment at final output size before introducing additional colors. Keep supporting captions quiet enough to distinguish them from the geometric block. Explore Monoton, Bungee Shade and Jost as independent display or geometric comparisons; none reproduces Calcula’s contextual system. Follow Typotheque for the original specimen and current acquisition terms, rather than treating this page’s specimens as the original software.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Is Labyrinth the current product name used by Typotheque?

The designer’s earlier interview uses Labyrinth as a working title. The linked development essay and current publisher family page use Calcula; use the publisher’s current identity when investigating the project.

Does Kufic inspiration mean this is an Arabic text font?

No. Inspiration and encoded script support are different questions. The linked current Calcula page lists Latin availability, so confirm the actual script support required by your text.
