01

Junicode: background and attribution

Junicode is Peter S. Baker’s open-source project for scholarly text, especially medieval and linguistic material. Junicode 2 is a rebuilt version of the earlier family. Its repository distinguishes it from Junicode 1 and explains that changing versions can alter line breaks and the behavior of nonbasic OpenType features.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The current project documents multiple weights and widths, plus a variable resource with weight, width and Enlarge axes. Its OpenType work emphasizes accessible, searchable text. An enlarged special character is a different operation from simply increasing the size of an entire paragraph.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Use a real scholarly passage containing your required marks and historical characters. Preserve the underlying text and compare search and copy behavior in the destination document. When updating an older edition, review the actual layout and feature choices rather than assuming that the new family is a drop-in replacement.

For independent comparisons, try EB Garamond and Cormorant Garamond. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
