Joyride: background and attribution
Matthew Messiha designed Joyride for Type Juice as an expansive display system built around width and expressive headline combinations. This is the Type Juice family, distinct from unrelated serif designs that also use the name Joyride. The creator’s presentation emphasizes combining different widths within a composition, giving the designer choices beyond enlarging or shrinking a single fixed word shape. That focus makes actual lettering combinations central to understanding the system.

Forms, styles and what to inspect
The family contains sixteen fonts, including wide, extended, outline and italic designs. Multiple width alternatives allow individual letter choices to change a word’s rhythm, with a substantial collection of alternate forms documented by the publisher. These choices should not automatically be interpreted as a single variable-font file: the listed styles and alternates describe the available lettering system. Compare the selected fonts and OpenType controls in the application intended for the final design.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Build a music-event title from two short words. Start with one width, then change a single letter or word to a broader alternative and compare the resulting balance. Use an outline style only if its counters and surrounding contrast stay clear at the final size. Set the date and location in a quieter face, and check the title at thumbnail size before adding further alternate letters or overlapping graphic elements.
For independent comparisons, try Russo One and Michroma. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
