ITC New Baskerville: background and attribution

John Quaranda developed ITC New Baskerville as a late-twentieth-century interpretation of John Baskerville’s eighteenth-century work. The publisher connects the historical types to punchcutter John Handy. This modern revival is distinct from Baskerville Old Face and other resources sharing the Baskerville name.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Inspect the contrast, italic treatment and available weights in the actual edition. A historical surname does not establish that two revivals use the same proportions, spacing or character repertoire.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a book paragraph and a larger formal heading. Lora and Source Serif 4 provide independent serif comparisons. Inspect the fine strokes at the final reading size and include punctuation and italic emphasis in the sample.

For independent comparisons, try Lora and Source Serif 4. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
