ITC Lubalin Graph: background and attribution

Herb Lubalin initiated ITC Lubalin Graph, with Tony DiSpigna and Joe Sundwall developing the production drawings in 1974, according to the publisher. Its relationship to ITC Avant Garde Gothic involved adapting the underlying forms to large slab serifs rather than simply attaching a new family name.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The publisher distinguishes later condensed work by Helga Jörgenson and Sigrid Engelmann in 1992. Inspect the intended width, weight and figure resources in the original specimen; a later branch is not evidence that every earlier file contains the same features.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a substantial editorial title and a shorter subheading. Rokkitt and Arvo provide independent slab-serif comparisons. Judge the counter space and line endings using the actual wording before selecting a condensed branch.

For independent comparisons, try Rokkitt and Arvo. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
