ITC Kabel: background and attribution
ITC Kabel is a distinct redrawing within the history of Rudolf Koch’s Kabel, rather than another name for the original or for Neue Kabel. Monotype’s history identifies Victor Caruso’s 1975 phototypesetting version for ITC, made under license from Stempel. The contemporary ITC announcement documents substantial proportional changes. Those changes connect this branch to the advertising typography of its own period, making it important to specify which Kabel version a comparison concerns.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The 1975 ITC announcement describes shortened lowercase ascenders, a more generous g descender and an extended f crossbar. It also records wider a and s forms, adjustments to the e and a larger overall x-height. These are structural differences, not simply new weight names applied to the original drawings. Compare lowercase words in particular when distinguishing the ITC interpretation from Koch’s original design and the later Neue Kabel revival.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Prepare a comparison using the same short heading, lowercase paragraph and numeral sequence in the available Kabel versions. Keep point size and line length identical initially, then compare the apparent size and internal rhythm. Pay particular attention to a, e, f, g and s. For a finished identity, choose one branch consistently and identify it accurately in the design notes instead of mixing files that happen to share the Kabel name.
For independent comparisons, try Josefin Sans and Jost. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
