ITC Garamond: background and attribution
Tony Stan’s ITC Garamond began with Book and Ultra weights in 1975, conceived as display companions to existing text designs. The publisher records additional Light and Bold resources and condensed designs in 1977. It is a particular modern interpretation within a broader Garamond lineage.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
A weight originally developed for display should be evaluated in its actual role. Compare standard, narrow and condensed resources separately, and do not transfer one edition’s feature list to every similarly named Garamond file.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a strong title, an italic subtitle and a longer paragraph. EB Garamond and Cormorant Garamond offer independent interpretations with different proportions. Use the same text and column width to judge the practical difference.
For independent comparisons, try EB Garamond and Cormorant Garamond. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
