ITC Galliard: background and attribution

Matthew Carter’s ITC Galliard reinterprets the sixteenth-century types of Robert Granjon for contemporary composition. MoMA’s collection record dates the work to 1978 and explains that Carter was adapting a historical style rather than making a literal copy of one earlier face. The name also evokes a Renaissance dance.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The museum highlights its small capitals, expressive characters and ligatures. Compare an italic passage as well as the upright setting. Keep the original family distinct from the later eText adaptation, which has its own resource identity and development credits.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Prepare a book-opening paragraph, a quotation and a small-cap subheading. Use real small capitals when the chosen resource supports them and inspect line breaks at the final reading size. Evaluate a screen-specific edition separately before replacing an established print layout.

For independent comparisons, try EB Garamond and Cormorant Garamond. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
